The 1850 s were a turbulent time in American history. The North and South were seeing total different views on the issue of slavery. The North saw slavery as immoral and that it was unconstitutional. The south on the other hand saw slavery as their right. The South viewed African Americans as lower human beings which justified slavery. The 1850 s was a time of attempted compromise when compromise was no longer possible. This quote best describes this time period, because Americans were trying to compromise their views to prevent a large conflict, but there were many events which made a compromise impossible. Blacks in the North started meeting in conventions and gathering discussing how unjust the ruling was and how outraged they we re over the decision. The court s ruling came as a victory for southerners, because it showed slaves that the road to freedom would not come as easy as a court case. John Brown was a frontiers man. He became somewhat of a celebrity in New England around 1857. He found his life s calling which was fundraising for the frontier exploits, or battles he conducted. When peace had come across Kansas in late 1857, Brown had developed a plan to capture the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. After collecting funds from his New England friends, Brown and his army moved to a farmhouse where they began to train. It was the night of October 16, 1859 when Brown and twenty-two men took over the arsenal. They waited for slaves to rally to his banner. Quickly the Virginia Militia and a detachment of the United States Marines put an end to John Browns Raid killing most of his men and wounding Brown himself. This raid scared southerners to death, because they feared a slave rebellion. Not only that, but this attack/rebellion was not planned within the South but planned by the North and acted on in the South. They are native to South America in the wild, weigh roughly 700-1200 grams, and usually live for around five years. Guinea pigs are tailless, herbivorous, and live in social colonies in the wild. They are active during the day. The guinea pig is very likely to get into space when space habitats are finally developed. They breed easily, have several litters per year, and mature quickly. A guinea pig gets about 5 times the size of a hamster, and eats more like a rabbit. They are both good pets though. They do look a lot alike, but are completely unrelated. Guinea pigs are a whole different species. Possibly not even rodents, scientists are debating that. Guinea pigs are the larger of the two, they don’t have a tail but they have a bump where there tail should have been. Guinea pigs are usually the hardest to train but once trained they will be very attached to you. Guinea pigs like to be kept in pair’s or groups. A perfect example of a social animal that enjoys each other’s company and like living outside. A guinea pig is bigger, and has a life span of about 5 to 10 years. Hamsters can actually be one of several species from the genus Phodopus (dwarf hamsters), Cricetulus (includes dwarf and normal sized species) or Mesocricetus. The most common pet hamster is Mesocricetus auratus, the Syrian hamster. Size of pet hamsters is usually around 5-15cm. The hamsters have little short hairless tails and prefer to live a solitary lifestyle, only coming together to mate. They are omnivores, mostly eating only seeds and fruits, but may also eat things like insects in the wild. Hamsters can live for around 1. 5 to 2 years and are nocturnal, being most active when it is dark. Hamsters are generally nocturnal which means that they will sleep in the night, but you can train them not too. Hamsters aren’t as clean as guinea pigs but they can be taught to use a litter box. Hamsters must be kept alone because of the fact that they are very territorial. Hamsters are usually solitary with the exception of dwarfs who can live happily in groups, they have a lifespan from 1. years to 3 years, but some can live longer. There are also different breeds of hamster, ranging from tiny Robo, Chinese Russian dwarf hamster to bigger Syrian ones. These have small tails. Rats are about 3/4 or even larger than hamsters with long tails. Hamsters bite if they smell food on you. By owning both animals : hamsters and guinea pigs it is safe to say ,guinea pigs are harder t o keep clean (as long as you don’t put 2 males in a cage with a female nearby), they are â€Å"sweeter† and seem more stable. Guinea pigs are more easily played with , and when they run on the floor you can find them way easier than hamsters! Pets provide us with so much more than companionship. Although there are responsibilities with pet ownership, the benefits greatly outweigh the work. Pets give us benefits not always readily available from our human companions and that’s unconditional love and acceptance. Our pets are always there for us and they are great listeners! In the early history of the civil rights movement Essay two prominent African American leaders, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois arose to accomplish one goal, education for all African Americans. During the turn of the century, between the years 1895 and 1915 there were many theories of how African Americans were going to achieve first-class citizenship. With two separate views on how to accomplish this goal, the African American community was split in half on who to support. While Booker T. Washington believed in industrial and agricultural labor, W.E.B. Du Bois proposed a strategy of pursuit through higher education in order to gain first-class citizenship for the African American race. Born the son of a slave, Booker Taliaferro Washington was considered during his time to be the spokesman of the African American race. Washington believed that if African Americans focused their attention on striving economically they would eventually be given the rights they were owed. With this in mind, he encouraged blacks to attend trade schools where they could learn to work either industrially or agriculturally. At his famous Atlanta Exposition Address in Atlanta he declared, Our greatest danger is that, in the great leap from slavery to freedom, we may overlook the fact that the masses of us are to live by the productions of our hands and fail to keep in mind that we shall prosper in the proportion as we learn to dignify and glorify common labor, and put brains and skill into the common occupations of life.. .. His suggestion was one that the Negro race was familiar with. The southern and northern whites accepted his plan because it acknowledged the inferiority of the black race. The Negro Okayed it because it was a way of life better than being haunted by the stagnation of sharecropping. With this statement, Washington stressed the fact that: . .. the opportunity here afforded will awaken among us a new era of industrial progress. He made a point that we as African Americans can achieve the rights we want if we present ourselves useful to the white race. Washington stated, No race that has anything to contribute to the markets of the world is long in any degree ostracized. It is important and right that all privileges of the laws be ours, but it is vastly more important that we be prepared for the exercise of those privileges. The opportunity to earn a dollar in a factory just now is worth infinitely more than the opportunity to spend a dollar in an opera house. Along with this came the conclusion that you had to befriend the southern white man. Washington made it known that befriending the white man was imperative to ending the black mans struggle. He said, To those of my race who depend on bettering their condition in a foreign land, or who underestimate the importance of cultivating friendly relations with the Southern white man who is their next-door neighbor, I would say: Cast down your bucket where you are; cast it down in making friends, in every manly way, of the people of all races by whom we are surrounded. All this and more was said in Atlanta, Georgia, the first time in history where a black man had ever spoken in front of so many white people. It was apparent to every African American who did not totally agree with Washingtons idea that this was a sign of submission for the black race. The submissive part, if none else, was where the conflict came in. Washington sent the message that if African Americans were going to come up; they would have to continue to use their hands as a means to be productive in a white society. Feeling that that was the only way they could fit into a society was seen as failure to some and led them to support another leader. Labeled as a radical, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, had a solid idea for African American progression. Described variously as the most outspoken civil rights activist in America, and the undisputed intellectual leader of a new generation of African- Americans, Du Bois was considered the inspiration for the literary movement known as the Harlem Renaissance. During this time, freak shows were very popular in Europe and Sara was treated in a cruel manner on account of her race. One of Sara’s body features that prompted the Europeans to declare her a freak was her unusually large buttocks. They also drew comparisons with some of her body features with apes, as opposed to humans, and this goes to show the extent to which racial prejudice against the Black race in general and African women in particular had gone. For example, her lips were likened to those of a chimpanzee (Tomaselli, 1988). This is a mockery not just to her race, but also class exploitation as she was from a race considered inferior to the White race. In the last three decades, we have witnessed the emergence of a vast body of literature that has endeavored to evaluate the Hottentot Venus. This is a derogatory term used by the Europeans in reference to Baartman and her ilk. Gould (1985) has explored the history of the Hottentot Venus while Scully and Crais (2008) have endeavored to examine the display of Baartman in London, along with the resultant racial and gendered stereotypes that marked the rise of scientific racism in Europe. Baartman was captured as a sla ve at the tender age of 15 years and as such, she lost her freedom early in life. Her story is therefore an example of what Abrahams (1996) refers to as a classic noble savage who happens to be the victim of racial exploitation by Europeans. She was not only objectified on account of her savage looks, but also humiliated in public. For example, men attending the parades were even allowed to poke her with their sticks. By comparing her to apes, the European society tries to depict that she Sara, along with her society, were closely related to apes than to the rest of the human race. Sara was racially discriminated against both in life and in death. Why Acute Angles Are Less Than 90 Degrees In geometry and mathematics, acute angles are angles whose measurements fall between 0 and 90 degrees or has a radian of fewer than 90 degrees. When the term is given to a triangle as in an  acute triangle, it means that all angles in the triangle are less than 90 degrees. It is important to note that the angle must be less than 90 degrees to be defined as an acute angle. If the angle is 90 degrees exactly, though, the angle is known as a right angle, and if it is greater than 90 degrees, it is called an obtuse angle. The ability of students to identify the different types of angles will greatly help them in finding the measurements of these angles as well as the lengths of the sides of shapes that feature these angles as there are different formulas students can use to figure out missing variables. Measuring Acute Angles Once students discover the different types of angles and begin to identify them by sight, its relatively simple for them to understand the difference between acute and obtuse and be able to point out a right angle when they see one. Still, despite knowing that all acute angles measure somewhere between 0 and 90 degrees, it may be difficult for some students to find the correct and precise measurement of these angles with the help of protractors. Fortunately, there are a number of tried and true formulas and equations for solving for missing measurements of angles and line segments that make up triangles. For equilateral triangles, which are a specific type of acute triangles whose angles all have the same measurements, consists of three 60 degree angles and equal length segments on each side of the figure, but for all triangles, the internal measurements of the angles always add up to 180 degrees, so if one angles measurement is known, its typically relatively simple to discover the other missing angle measurements. Using Sine, Cosine, and Tangent  to Measure Triangles If the triangle in question is a right angle, students can use trigonometry in order to find the missing values of the measurements of angles or line segments of the triangle when certain other data points about the figure are known. The basic trigonometric ratios of sine (sin), cosine (cos), and tangent (tan) relate a triangles sides to its non-right (acute) angles, which are referred to as theta (ÃŽ ¸) in trigonometry. The angle  opposite  the right angle is called the hypotenuse and the other two sides  that form the right angle are known as the legs. With these labels for the parts of a triangle in mind, the three trigonometric ratios (sin, cos, and tan) can be expressed in the following set of formulas: cos(ÃŽ ¸)   adjacent/hypotenusesin(ÃŽ ¸)   opposite/hypotenusetan(ÃŽ ¸)   opposite/adjacent If we know the measurements of one of these factors in the above set of formulas, we can use the rest to solve for the missing variables, especially with the use of a graphing calculator which has a built-in function for calculating sine, cosine, and tangents.

America continues to take a great pride in individuality from many facets. Each American has the desire to have the prosperous in wealth and have a standard of life of luxury. This attribute can be traced back to the ideals of early colonists, who wanted to isolate themselves from the British rule on the first place. The expression of individuality and liberalism has been consistent element for all Americans and what makes America unique. Another element that has been derived as a result of the revolutionary war that has transformed America to be exceptional is the fact that Americans are conditioned to change and clash against status quo. Concert Review Essay Example for Free

Concert Review Essay The rhythm, which was continuously steady seemed to get faster like a heart beat by the climax of the song. It was also at this point that the dynamics of the song were increasingly getting louder until all instruments met at the top with a bang and then changed the dynamics again to a moderate level until the song concluded. â€Å"Waltz for Debby†, written by Bill Evans and arranged by Don Sebesky, was a consonant, slow-beat waltz. The texture of this piece remained the same through its entirety and the 1,2,3 pattern was also very noticeably throughout the piece as well. The saxophone, trumpet and electric guitar took turns at the melody and did so through this performance in the form of solos. The dynamics throughout this song were soft and then increased to a moderate level before a decrescendo to a softer level once again. The ensemble did a fabulous job of keeping with the beat. â€Å"Ancient Memories†, by Fred Hamilton and arranged by Paul Ferguson, was played the night of the concert by guest trumpeter, Darryl White. Mr. White played this song because it is the title track on his 1999 album, also called â€Å"Ancient Memories†. Mr. White is a professor of trumpet at the University of Nebraska. This piece began by having very dissonant tones within the harmony with the introduction of a piano and drums. The song then changed into a more consonant harmony, which remained throughout the rest of the song. The texture of this song was polyphonic between the trumpet and the piano. The melody of this song was bright and happy in some places within the song and more cool and relaxing in other parts as the tempo changed and the notes of the trumpet were held for emphasis. There were many dynamics used within this song. The song began with a crescendo from very soft to very loud and then remained in this pattern until the end when the pattern was reversed. â€Å"Fly Me to the Moon† was for me a song of romance from the time the first note began. The song was passionate and sexy and displayed dialogue without using any words. The ensemble played this piece with steadiness and the solo by Cassi Lee provided the extended dialogue that sounded like dancing and twirling in the moonlight. This song reminded me of â€Å"My Heart Will Go On† in that the instrumental nature of it tells a story, just as much as when Celine Dion is singing the lyrics. I found listening to this song a worthwhile experience and it was a fantastic beginning to the jazz concert in that it was familiar to the audience. â€Å"Waltz for Debby’ made me wonder who Debby was and why someone would write such an old-sounding song for someone they loved. The song was very pretty, but it was of a different genre than that of the other pieces within the concert. It is honestly hard for me to recommend this song to anyone, for I thought it was dull and lacked the depth of the other songs throughout the evening. â€Å"Ancient Memories† was a beautiful piece. I am not sure what I enjoyed more, the fact that Mr. White played with such passion and made the song his own life force or that this piece reminded me of my childhood. This piece reminded me of something Bill Cosby would have on the Cosby Show in one of the jazz clubs. The song was fun and although the song had a lot of repetition, I loved listening to the changes over and over again. The Jazz Ensemble concert at Tarleton was an enjoyable evening full of great music and intellectually stimulating experiences of music that I would not have listened to if not for this assignment. Diversification is an important lesson to learn when viewing music because all music has roots from another genre and recognizing this makes you more diversified as an individual.

Modern technology has been crucial in the latter for creating databases.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  One of the most imperative pieces to completing any organized crime scenario are the day in and day out facts of how the organization was ran, what people were contacted, and the different types of activities that were illegally preformed. The analyst must be able to obtain information in order to make an analysis of what or who may or may not be at the root of a crime(s). This type of information can be found in law enforcement files, which are now moving towards electronically storing information. The analyst must be especially computer literate in order to research criminal activity and association. One device that the analyst has available is the Internet. Although this is not the only open source information-collecting device, it is one of the most commonly used open source methods. The problem of the â€Å"wheat versus chaff† can be realized very easily at any search engine. New Heritage Doll Essay

Introduction Emily Harris is the Vice president of New Heritage Doll Company’s production division. In mid-September of 2010 she was trying to decide on project proposals for the company’s capital budget meeting in October. Of the proposals presented to her, two of them stood out based on their innovation and ability to strengthen the division’s product lines. The first project, Match My Doll Clothing Line Expansion (MMDC), would extend the warm weather products to an all-weather clothing line. The second project, Design your Own Doll (DYOD), would start with a website where customers would choose the doll’s features, color, etc. and then the dolls will be made to order. The firm could decline both of the proposals because of managerial and financial resource constraints. Other divisions in the company are also expected to promote projects of their own. Because of these factors Harris has to choose to promote one of her division’s projects over the other. The fo llowing questions will help Harris make the best decision for her division and help support her recommendation when communicating back with the divisions executives. 1. Set forth and compare the business cases for each of the two projections under consideration by Emily Harris. Which do you regard as more compelling? The Match My Doll Clothing Line Expansions (MMDC) Project involves expanding the existing successful Match My Doll Clothing line. This clothing line originally consisted of a few sets of matching doll and child clothing for warm weather. Given its current success, there is a consideration to expand it to include all season clothing line. Since it is an expansion to existing product line, investment in operating capital, pricing structure and product cost can be based on historical information. The company should be able to use current sales channels like selling to retail divisions or private labels. New Heritage should be able to outsource manufacturing of this product line expansion to Asia, similar to other existing products. The Design Your Own Doll (DYOD) Project involves creation of new customized dolls to customer’s specification. This project will require new web-based doll-design software. Due to lead time constraints, the company will have to consider manufacturing this made-to-order product line in-house or outsource it to contract manufacturers in USA instead of Asia. This would be a new manufacturing channel for the company. Product cost is expected to be high due to low volume and customized set up. New Heritage Doll Company will have to be thorough when they calculate product cost and price structures for this new product line. This new product will probably be sold through on-line channels only. Without any financial information, the Match My Doll Clothing Line Expansions (MMDC) looks more attractive because it involves less risk and less capital investment and utilizes existing infrastructure and well established sales channels. 2. Use the operating projections for each project to compute a net present value (NPV) for each. Which project creates more value? We assumed that the Match My Doll Clothing Line Expansions (MMDC) Project is a medium risk project since it is an extension to existing successful product line so we used risk-adjusted cost of capital of 8.4%. We believe that project 2 (DYOD) is a much higher risk project since it is a completely new product line for the company and requires an information technology component, so we used risk-adjusted cost of capital of 9%. According to Exhibit 1, the Match My Doll Clothing Line Expansions (MMDC) Project has a Net Present Value (NPV) of $7,150 and Exhibit 2 shows that the Design Your Own Doll (DYOD) Project has a Net Present Value (NPV) of $7,058. Both projects have positive NPV and would create value for the company. However, the Match My Doll Clothing Line Expansions (MMDC) Project has a slightly higher NPV so it would create more value for the company . 3. Compute the internal rate of return (IRR) and payback period for each project. How should these metrics affect Harris’s deliberations? How do they compare to NPV as tools for evaluating projects? When and how would you use each? The internal rate of return (IRR) for the Match My Doll Clothing Line  Expansions (MMDC) is 24.0% based on the NPV calculated above ($7,150). The IRR for the Design Your Own Doll (DYOD) project is 17.9% based on the NPV calculated above ($7058). The calculated IRRs of the two projects do not eliminate either from consideration. Both projects IRR’s are above their individually assigned discount rates, 8.4% for MMDC and the higher (riskier) 9.0% for DYOD. The MMDC Project has an IRR=24%, MIRR=21%, payback of 7.4 years and discounted payback of 9.1 years. The DYOD Project has IRR=17.9%, MIRR=16.4%, payback of 9.1 years and discounted payback of 9.4 years. The MMDC Project has a higher NPV and better internal rate of returns (both IRR and MIRR) than DYOD Project. The MMDC Project has a shorter payback and discounted payback period than DYOD Project. So based on financial analysis, the MMDC Project is more attractive than DYOD Project. The DYOD Project is more capital intensive and even though it might potentially generate higher revenues, it would take longer to generate free cash flow. The NPV is lower for the DYOD Project in this case because it uses higher risk-adjusted cost of capital than the MMDC Project. One point to mention is that the payback period is less sophisticated than IRR or NPV. The payback period looks at the cash flows and determines when the money paid out will be recovered by the benefits of a project. The payback period looks at a project only until the costs have been recovered. This analysis tool is often ignored because it does not take into consideration the time value of money. The time value of money limitation of the payback period can be modified by using the discounted cash flows of a project for the analysis of when the outflows will be recovered. To make the most informed decision the IRRs and payback periods of the projects should be compared in conjunction with the NPVs of the two projects. The NPV analysis of the two projects under consideration indicates that the MMDC Project is the better of the two projects. 4. What additional information does Harris need to complete her analyses and compare the two projects? What specific questions should she ask each of the project sponsors? When comparing the two projects other than comparing the NPV and IRR of each project Harris will need to look at other factors as well. Among the factors that should be considered along with the NPV and IRR, are the manufacturing capabilities, the company’s core competencies, and ensuring that the project aligns with the company’s corporate strategy. With this being said the DYOD Project is at a disadvantage because the MMCD Project is already a successful operation which allows Harris to analyze the historical data as opposed to the project projections of DYOD. Using the factual data provided by MMCD is a less risky option for Harris to choose. In order to ensure that Harris is making the correct decision on which project to select she should ask the following question of each of the project sponsors: Is manufacturing children’s clothing part of the core competencies of New Heritage? Is your project aligned with the mission and long term strategies of the company? What are the differences in New Heritages current market and the doll market? How will scaling up production affect operating and overhead costs? What is the level of risk of the Design Your Own Doll project? Did they consider all hidden labor costs in the MMDC Line Expansion, which are similar to the extra labor costs in the DYOD project? Additionally, it would also be helpful if Harris had information about projects submitted by other departments to make sure that proposed production department projects are in-line with other department projects and an overall company strategy. Even though financially the MMDC Project is more compelling, maybe there is a good reason to pick the DYOD Project. For example, if one of the other divisions is submitting a complimentary project to the DYOD, maybe that would lower the overall risk of the DYOD Project and make it more appealing strategically. 5. If Harris is forced to recommend one project over the other, which should she recommend? Why? Since Harris can only promote one project during the capital budget meeting we would recommend that she support the MMDC Project. Of the two projects presented by her division it has the highest NPV. Financial Management authors Brigham and Ehrhardt state often ‘‘whenever conflicts exist between mutually exclusive projects, use the NPV method†. The NPV method tells us how much a project will add to the value of the company. This is a stated  goal of the New Heritage Doll Company. Also, this project would seem to further solidify relationships with strong customers and gain new ones by broadening the brand and leveraging existing infrastructure.

Being a Gentleman – Great Expectations

Great Education Many describe Charles Dickens' Great Expectations as a Bildungsroman † a novel tracing the education and spiritual growth of a young hero, in this case Philip Pirrip, better known as Pip. Pip's thoughts on education change throughout the course of the story, beginning with idealistic views of becoming a gentleman and ending with a deeper, more intellectual perspective of being a gentleman. After meeting the wealthy and once elegant Miss Havisham, Pip becomes ashamed of his life as a lowly peasant and son ofa blacksmith. He believes MissHavisham and Estella are better than he is, and he yearns to be a member of the elite. This commences his longing for an education. At first, he attempts to learn on his own, but realizes It Is a useless effort. Then, on the day young PIP Is told he will be moving to London so that he may become a gentleman, he dreams start to become reality. During PIP's childhood and adolescence, he believes that the sole purpose of his educatio n Is to become an intelligent social elite. According to Pip, the distinguished members of society with education are perhaps better than the less fortunate.Sadly, that belief becomes a part of his personality. On his Journey toward nobility, he disregards his immediate family and closest friends. He ignores his beloved Joe and Is even embarrassed to be in his presence. Every time Joes Insists on vlsltlng his old pal, Pip attempts either to sabotage the trip completely, or to shorten Joe's stay with him as much as possible. In the midst of it all, he becomes more and more obsessed with the beautiful, coldhearted Estella. As PIP matures, he slowly loses his boastful attitude. He helps his best friend,Herbert Pocket, start a business, even obtalnlng money from Miss Havisham to Invest in Herbert's business, without Herbert's knowledge. In addition, he gradually loses interest in Estella, realizing Biddy is the right woman for him. He goes home only to discover that Joe and Biddy marrie d. However, the evolved PIP feels happiness for them, while he silently suffers for himself. By the end of the novel Pip learns that there is much more to life than social rank. He is aware that family and friends are more significant than money and power.In he closing chapters as Pip is planning Magwitch's escape, he knows the Inheritance from his benefactor will cease to exist If Magwitch's Identity Is exposed. Yet, he still fights to help the old convict who insured his quest to become a gentleman. After the plan fails, Pip becomes overwhelmed with sickness, and it is Joe who arrives to nurse the disease-stricken Pip back to health. It is at this moment where Pip realizes what constitutes being a gentleman, and what does not. Joe, the person who cares for PIP the most, hsd the least amount of education roves to be the true gentleman all along.

Was a very dark and gloomy day. Thousands of Black Birds landed on Wall Street. The thousand plus birds began to devour any thing they could find to eat. Nearly half of the birds never took flight again. Many of the birds died of exhaustion. This was an ominous sign of the dark and desperate times ahead. America was about to enter its lowest and darkest point in its short history. My great grandma lived on her farm in Iowa oblivious to the fact that her life would soon be changing in drastic ways. She had know idea of what was going on at Wall Street. She had no idea that she was going to have to move. Her family would soon have to start all over in a new place. Tuesday October 29, 1929. This dark day would soon be remembered as Black Tuesday. The day Americas economy would crumble. The Best Way To Practice ACT Reading SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips At last, the time has come when you must tackle the ACT Reading. How can you practice for the ACT Reading? Where can you find ACT Reading practice questions? Is it even possible to practice for the Reading section? A Brief Breakdown Of ACT Reading To start off, I’m going to do a quick runthrough of the structure of ACT Reading. Feel free to skip over it to the Important Tips (â„ ¢) (alas, not actually trademarked, unless I can trademark things just by typing the symbol...in which case I just trademarked that). Also, a quick disclaimer: all of this information is for the current ACT. If there are any significant changes, we'll be sure to update this article accordingly. Currently, the ACT Reading section consists of 40 passage-based multiple choice questions (each with four answer choices) which you must answer in 35 minutes. ACT Reading is always the third section of the test, and contains passages in four different content areas: Prose Fiction or Literary Narrative, Social Science, Humanities, and Natural Science. The 40 questions are divided up equally among all the content areas. Historically, there were only four passages on the ACT, with one passage in each content area; since June 2014, however, ACT, Inc. has begun to incorporate paired passages (two short passages with questions ask you about each passage and to compare the two passages in several ways) into the exam, which means that you may face up to 5 passages (across 4 subject areas) on the ACT. Unfortunately, there aren't really any good study materials for these paired passages out there yet - but more on that in an upcoming article. If you want to read more about the ACT (and the Reading section in particular), look into our articles on the length of the ACT and what's actually tested on ACT Reading. Now that you have a better idea of what exactly is on ACT Reading, let’s segue into tips for how to practice the ACT Reading section in the most effective way. ACT Reading Practice Tip 1: Use Official ACT Tests When you are practicing for the ACT, you MUST use official ACT questions. Why? Because only official ACT questions will test you the same way the real test does. Part of what is difficult about the ACT is that it takes concepts everyone knows (since it's standardized, it has to stick to standard knowledge) and then asks about them in weird ways. Therefore, the best way to insure you get used to the weird ways of questioning is to do actual ACT questions. As PrepScholar co-founder Allen Cheng has said, â€Å"If you train yourself on questions that aren't anything like what the ACT writes, you're going to learn the wrong patterns.† So where can you find official tests? Well, to start out with, we've compiled a complete list of all the available free complete ACT tests. You can also buy The Real ACT (3rd edition) as well as ACT Inc's online prep program to gain access to additional official tests (more about where you can do that in this article). Finally, the PrepScholar test prep platform integrates up to 5 offical ACT tests as part of your customized study program. ACT Reading Practice Tip 2: Practice Under Realistic Conditions When you take the ACT, you’ll be constrained not only by the amount of time you have to answer Reading questions (35 minutes), but in when you take the Reading section. What do I mean by this? Only that on test day, you'll be taking the Reading section third, having already spent the first two hours or so on the English and Math sections. In all likelihood, your brain will be tired, and you won't get a break from Reading questions partway through - you must do all 40 at once. If switching back and forth between sections sound like it might be more up your alley, try reading our article on the differences between the SAT and ACT to see if the SAT might be a better match for you. Bottom line: I recommend not only practicing Reading questions in isolation, but also doing Reading questions as part of at least one full-length timed practice test so you can get used to what it will feel like to have your brain possibly liquefied by the time you get to Reading. Additionally, make sure to take at least one practice test at the same time of day you would be taking the ACTual ACT (I will never stop doing this) so that you'll have a good idea of how tired you might be. If this is you in the mornings, then a practice Reading section done in the afternoon may not be the best gauge of how you'll do on test day. ACT Reading Practice Tip 3: Review Your Mistakes Effectively The most important part of studying that many students skip over is EFFECTIVELY reviewing mistakes. Learning from your mistakes isn’t just a saying - it’s the single most useful tool for improving your test score. Yes, it’s tempting to just look at a question and go â€Å"oh, I made a stupid mistake† and just move on (I mean, what person wants to dwell on what she/he got wrong?). KLAXON! KLAXON! Failing to review your mistakes is the biggest mistake of all. To see real improvement in your score, you really need to get down into the nitty gritty of WHY you made the mistake. For example, what kinds of QUESTIONS or PASSAGES do you struggle with? Do you tend to have problems with Prose Fiction passages, no matter what the question is asking? Maybe you struggle when answering inference questions on passages (Line 42 primarily suggests that†¦), or finding the main point of a paragraph. Identifying the types of questions you struggle with most is necessary for creating the most helpful study plan - there's no point in wasting precious prep time practicing questions you already know how to answer. If your problems are with particular types of passages, you're in luck - we have an article with detailed explanations of each of the types of ACT passages. Have problems with passage-based questions? Go through our skills articles on vocabulary-in-context, big picture,little picture/detail, function and development, and inference questions. You can also brush up your passage reading skills with our article on the best way to approach the passage on ACT Reading. What about the kinds of MISTAKES you tend to make? Why did you make them? Don't just stop at surface explanations. Surface reason: oh, I just ran out of time for this question because it was at the end of the Reading section. I totally could have gotten it since it was asking about a detail that was really easy to find. This response is not helpful, because it doesn't make you learn from what you did wrong (and if you don't learn from your error, there's nothing to stop you from continuing to mess up). Nitty gritty:I ran out of time because I spent too much time on the Prose Fiction passage and ran out of time by the time I got to the Natural Science questions. How can I avoid this in the future? I should figure out which passages are easiest for me and which are hardest, then make sure I start with the easiest ones (since I don't have to do the section in order). I also need to make sure that I really only skim on my first readthrough or read the questions first and do all the detail ones that don’t rely on having to read the whole passage. Here's another example of possible reactions to getting a question wrong: Surface reason: There were two answers that seemed like they were kind of right, and I went with the wrong one. Oh well. Nothing I can do about that. A good start, but WHY did you go with the wrong one? You must look deeeeeeeeper. Nitty gritty: I didn’t read the question carefully enough to get what it was really asking. Because of this, when I went back to the passage I wasn’t able to eliminate three wrong answers. Next time, I'll really focus on exactly what the question is asking and make sure I answer the question based only on the information in the passage, not based on my outside knowledge. Learn the way the ACT asks you about concepts to avoid tripping up on questions you know the answer to. 2. Practice under realistic conditions. Don't neglect to do timed reading sections as well as full-length practice tests, so you can get used to switching from Reading to other subject areas and back to Reading again. 3. Mark questions you are unsure of when you are taking the test. This way, you’re not just reviewing questions you got wrong - you’re also reviewing questions you were shaky on. 4. Review your mistakes so you can pinpoint your higher level weaknesses and drill them. If there's a particular type of question you tend to mess up on, focus your studying on that skill type. 5. Do it all over again: never give up [your test prep], never surrender. As you study, your weak areas may shift, so don’t hesitate to adapt your studying plan to fit your current skill level. For instance, if you had planned to spend a week studying each type of question, but find that after a couple of days you’ve already got the hang of answering questions that ask you to search for details in the passage, don’t waste your time spending five extra days on it - reallocate that time to an area that needs your attention more. However, the senior nurse may lack their authoritative figure. Based on the response of the DON, the most effective and efficient leadership styles that ought to be incorporated are the democratic and affiliative leadership styles.
